Kids just want to have fun and experience the world and the best way to help them to do so is to plan a trip to a local museum and let them learn, explore and be creative. We have a few amazing kid friendly museums here on Tybee and in Savannah that are great for all ages and learning styles. So grab the kids, some snacks and head on over to one or all of these great museums.
Savannah Children's Museum - Learn, explore and play all at the same time with the Savannah Children's Museum. This museums features a great outdoor space with a variety of exhibits created and designed to expand the imaginations of children of all ages. From a sensory garden to an exploration maze and more. There is always something new to explore and learn at this kids- only museum.
Tybee Island Marine Science Center - A unique outdoor learning experience for students of all ages, from Pre K to 12th grade and is located right on Tybee Island! Coastal Classroom programs are two-hours in length. You can choose from a variety of classroom and field modules, in half-hour and one-hour segments, to build your students’ program. Also, the Floating Classrooms and Coastal Scientist programs can be stand alone or combined with the modules for a full day of programming. These are all a great ways to study and enjoy marine life and ecology of Georgia.
ArtZeum at the Jepson Center - The Jepson Center houses the ArtZeum, an interactive children's museum in Savannah. The ArtZeum features twenty-four activities exploring some big ideas about art: What is art? Why do we make art? How do we look at art? How do we value art? There so many unique activities to explore including 2-D and 3-D puzzles, making a master piece from household materials and more. This will be sure to bring out the creative side of anyone, no matter their age.
Tybee Island Light station and Museum - Take a tour of the Tybee Lighthouse. The lighthouse has a total of 178 stairs so this adventure is best for older children who are able to walk up numerous stairs safely and once there they will have a chance to see from the top of the lighthouse and view Tybee Island and the Atlantic Ocean. The Tybee Island Museum is actually was used to be Fort Screven and it features displays of military equipment, uniforms, weapons and many other historical pieces from the Civil War and from Tybee's rich history.
Georgia State Railroad Museum - The Georgia State Railroad Museum is a stunning National Historic Landmark that is part of a National Historic Landmark District in Savannah. Enjoy a close-up view of the fully operational turntable, learn about the many historic railcars and rolling stock on display, and experience the handcar with the help of a knowledgeable and friendly historic interpreter. They have a variety of daily programming ranging from guided tours, nostalgic train rides, turntable and blacksmith demonstrations and more.
Oatland Island Wildlife Center - Walk through 160 acres of pristine maritime forest & encounter some 100 animals from 40+ species. This wildlife center is located about 10 minutes from Tybee. The animals are exhibited in large natural habitats along a rustic trail through forest and marsh lands. The "Wolf Wilderness" exhibit features gray wolves, armadillos, flying squirrels, screech owls and a selection of reptiles. Along the trail are cougars, bobcats, bison, alligators, red fox and birds of prey. Cows, sheep, goats and rabbits can be viewed in the "Georgia Farm" area. We recommend families with young children consider visiting Oatland Island for Toddler Tuesday. The program is designed to introduce young children to their natural world. Toddlers and their adults will experience themed activities including live animal encounters, wildlife nature walks, storytelling, fun songs, interactive finger-plays, and creative crafts. We recommend bringing: comfortable shoes, bug spray, and snacks as participants are welcome to walk the trails and visit all of Oatland’s animals after the program. They also have a great summer camp for grades from K-8.
Fort Pulaski National Monument - There are so many things to see, explore and learn at Fort Pulaski for all ages. Fort Pulaski is located about 10 minutes outside of Tybee Island. They offered guided tours, historic weapons demonstrations and feature numerous educational programs for kids of all ages including the Junior Ranger Program, Junior Civil War Historian Program and the Civil War Trading Card Program. There also many miles of nature trails where you can catch a glimpse of many of Savannah's local wildlife.
