What do tennis shoes, donuts, turkeys, pickles, and Rock n Roll have in common?

They are all things that you will see this “race season” in Savannah and Tybee Island Georgia!

Once the heat of the summer passes, and the cool and amazing fall weather starts to settle upon us, we begin to feel a little restless down here.  What better way to enjoy the outdoors than to lace up some running shoes and head into the crisp air of fall for some fun and exercise.  Our race season in Tybee and Savannah extends from September through March. We have some exciting races coming up! Maybe it’s time to pack up some gear and register yourself and your running pals and come-on down to Savannah or Tybee.

Runners come from all over to race our city streets in November for our annual Rock and Roll Marathon.  Experienced marathoners and high spirited, first time half marathon runners all join for the largest event in our area. The Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series brought its brand of Running entertainment to Savannah several years ago, entertaining runners, walkers, and those looking for some great fun and entertainment. Thousands of participants challenge themselves on the charming, scenic courses through the historic downtown district, finding southern hospitality at every turn. With a marathon, half marathon, 5K, 1 mile, and 2-person half marathon relay, there is something for everyone.

With the holidays right around the corner, November is a great time to get outdoors and enjoy the fall air. Take a break from stuffing the Thanksgiving turkey, and head out early on Thanksgiving morning for the annual Turkey Trot in Daffin Park in Savannah. This event helps support the United Way. This is a super fun run with people from all walks of life, just gathering together to get in a good walk before gobbling up a few extra calories later that day.

We have so many options for those who love to run and are avid runners. But, what is out there for us regular folks who just love the outdoors, and love to express ourselves in other ways?

Well, my friends, don’t you worry… there is a “race” for everyone – young and old, fit – and ‘ahem, less fit.  What about running for donuts? Running over the bridge to grab a cold beer at the end at the EnMarket Savannah Bridge Run? What about a Pickle Run? Sounds like a blast! There are lots of ways to incorporate walk/run events and tons of fun with friends!

February brings the fun to Tybee Island for the annual Critz Tybee Run Fest – February 1st and 2nd. This fun event has something for everyone! Five separate races take place – participants can choose to run just 1 – or run up to 5 events! Challenging yourself to all 5 events will make it a full marathon! There is a 1 mile, 2.8-mile beach run, 5K race, 10K race, and a 13.1mile half marathon.

Race/running events are popping up all the time. They are a great way to support a charity as most events fill a philanthropic community need. There are volunteer opportunities for many of the events. Maybe the best way to get into shape for the new year is to challenge yourself to a 'couch to 5K program' to get ready for an event. And remember, you don't have to run... it is great to get out and walk! Slow and steady wins the race when it comes to getting out and beating your best personal record.
