On Aug. 21, people in the United States will be able to see the sun disappear behind the moon in a total solar eclipse. For those of us who are lucky enough to be in Savannah, GA and Tybee, GA, it makes it a perfect reason to escape from the ordinary, and prepare to enjoy this very rare event. In our area, we will not see a total eclipse, but we will experience an almost total eclipse, being about 97% totality. Not too shabby! If you are wondering where is the best place to experience this event locally, here are a few suggestions for how to make the most out of your Solar Eclipse experience in Savannah, and on Tybee Island.
If you are considering a trip to the beach, You can use this interactive map from NASA to zoom in on the path and find out the exact locations from which it will be visible.
The government agency noted the only safe way to look directly at partially eclipsed or uneclipsed Sun are via special-purpose solar filters, including "eclipse glasses" or hand-held solar viewers.
